My Acne Story

I am someone who did not have severe acne problems which I am quite shock. Seeing my mother who have quite bad skin and have a lot of skin problems. Oh thank God! Even though I did not have severe acne, I do have them once in a while. Not only that, the acnes would leave scars behind; which are also called hyperpigmentation. No matter what type of acne I had or whether I prick on them or not, it just leave a scar there!

I have a lot of those small mini pimples (Papules). When I say a lot, it means a lot. They would always stay together and spreading the healthy skin around them. Maybe I am just thinking or imagine too much but anyway. It is like they are a gang and forcing the surround skin to join them! Plus, I have a few gangs and not just 1. They just keep growing! Not only that! They stay together for years! Like they are still there on my face but I manage to make the gang smaller and prevent them from growing. That is a big improvement for me.

For the typically average pimple (Simply any inflamed bumps) it take forever to go away. I am someone who does not burst their pimples. You may say that it is because of that my pimples takes forever to go away. However, there are a lot of cons of bursting a pimple then having a pimple on your face.

Some cons are

  • Creating a dent/hole in your skin
  • Darker hyperpigmentation (For me Some people will just hyperpigmentation. Trust me. There is a difference and you would not want to experience it)
  • Spreading the virus to the surrounding tissues
  • Increase the risk of having more pimples
  • It hurts!! A lot!

Blackheads and Whiteheads!!! These are the hidden acnes that usually only yourself would know. Due to my skin type, I would have more whiteheads more than blackheads. This does not mean I do not suffer from blackheads. I still have them just that I am more worried about the whiteheads than blackheads. As my whiteheads would stay on my face for years until someone can prick it out cause most of the time it is super deep that the therapist cannot take it out. That’s how bad it is. Plus, nose strips does not work on me at all and oh!

BTW: Nose strips are not good for the pores by the way. It will make your pores bigger.

However, thankfully I manage to find a product that helps to get rid of these two irritating things. It is in this routine. Will tell you later!

TIPS: Know your skin! When a pimple pops up on a certain area, try to recall and think back on what things could cause it. It is not always your products that you use! See your lifestyle. It is usually the cause. For example, your diet, stress level, lacking of water. So when a pimple pops up on your skin, you would know the reason behind it. Not only that, you can prevent the acne in advance!

Disclaimer

I am not a skin care specialist, dermatologist or any of those sorts. I am a just a female who is really interested and love skin care. Also, whatever works for me may not work for you. If you are have severe acne or complicated skin issues, please go to a dermatologist to check it out. As the problem may come from other factors. For example, genes or hormones.

What I have written here are things I have researched about, tried and tested them; and found what works for me.

I am still trying to improve my anti-acne routine or any routine for that matter. The acne cycle is very complicated that happens inside your pores weeks before it appears. This routine helps me to tame down my acnes and prevent more acne from appearing. Not in by all means to get rid of acnes completely.

What causes Acne?

There are 4 things that causes acne Clogged pores, dead cells, oil and bacteria.

Acne Cycle
  • Dead Cells mix with sebum = Clogged Pores, Trap Oils and Bacteria
  • Overproduction of sebum due to emotional stress or puberty = Trapping oil, collecting oil and building pressure inside the pores
  • Bacteria starts to bread when there are a ton of sebum = Increase of bacterial
  • Bacteria release inflammatory byproducts and your body mounts an immune reaction =Pimple

This happens weeks before you see it on your face. It is a complicated acne cycle.

Type of Acnes

There are 2 main groups of acne.

  • Non-inflammatory (Comedones) –  It is not red and painful
    1. Blackheads
    2. Whiteheads
  • Inflammatory – Painful, deep, red and swollen
    1. Papules
    2. Pustules
    3. Nodules
    4. Cysts

Routine for Morning

I would mostly be using the same thing but just lesser products. For the steps that have the # sign, I would be using it for the morning. However, for the moisturizer, I would most of the time change to Belif Creamy Moisture Deep Moist and apply sunscreen(Duh!). This is when I do not want my make-up be dewy or when I have fitness classes to teach in the morning which is almost every day (Due to my job).

Routine for Night

Like the previous past posts, I would not be putting my pre-cleanse / make-up remover steps. Since it is self-exploratory and I have talk about it in my Part 1 of this series. Also, I would alternate the AHAs and BHAs with Retinol (Vitamin A). As my skin would start to react when I put the acids on my face many or too much times.

Step 1: Extra Clarisonic using Tony Moly Glue Form Cleanser (# without the clarisonic)

IMG_9926

If you have read Part 1 of this series, you all know that I would use Clarisonic on alternate days (Max). So you all would know that I would use this without actually putting into the different routines. I have 2 reasons why I actually put Clarisonic in this routine. The first reason is to deep cleanse my skin and get rid of the dead skin. This is so the next product would clean my skin better. As the next product helps to get rid of blackheads and whiteheads.

The 2nd reason is have an extra cleansing and exfoliating by doing an extra step using the Clarisonic.

How I use it: Once I have massage the cleanser into my skin and it is slightly foamy. (It defers on the type of cleansing product) I would use the Clarisonic as per usual. However, once I do 1 full cycle, I would use it on the areas that I would usually would small baby acnes. Like my chin area and center of my eyebrows. WARNING: Do not use this on those cysts or big pimples with pus in them. You might cause the virus to spread or agitate it.

Step 2: Belif Nose-Shine Boy

IMG_9952

This is the amazing product that I was talking about that helps to remove blackheads and whiteheads. Even though it was meant for blackheads but I felt it helps remove whiteheads. It is an oil balm that turns into oil when in contact with heat.

This slowly dissolves the blackheads and whiteheads on your face. It will somehow loosen the “grip” that the pores have on the blackheads and whiteheads and slowly remove them! It takes quite some time to see visible results. It took me about 2 to 3 weeks to see it. This is a very gentle, simple and painless way to get rid of those nasty blackheads and whiteheads. Suitable for all skin types!

Experience: When I got lazy and stop using it for a while; thinking my skin is all good now; all the horrible blackheads and whiteheads came back!! This product gets all the glory!

Step 3: Tony Moly Glue Form Cleanser

Tony Moly Glue Foam Cleanser

The reason why I am putting this again inside the routine is due to the previous step. I need to use a cleanser to wash off the balm on my face. I would just wash the areas that has the balm on it and not wash my whole face.

Step 4: Toner (# For morning just choose either 1)

Pixi Glow Tonic

Pixi Glow Tonic

This is a mild exfoliation product that is also good for getting rid of dirt that your cleanser did not manage to get rid of while balancing your pH level at the same time. This is good for people who are new to AHAs or have reaction to the higher concentration of AHAs.

DIY Apple Cider Vinegar

IMG_9922

For someone like me who prefer not to have any fragrance in her skin care products, I still like to use this very strong toner. This do wonder for my skin and there are no horrible chemicals that most companies put into their products. Frankly, I feel this provides much better results than those anti-acne products. My skin love this a lot! There are a lot of reasons why I use this and it would be very long. So I have summarize the reason why I use Apple Cider Vinegar.

  • Remove dead skin cells
  • Antibacterial
  • Anti-Fungal
  • Anti-Viral
  • Unclogged pores
  • Remove excess sebum
  • Balance sebum production on your skin
  • Balance pH levels

Do I need to say anymore why I put this in? I will do an extra blog post this week on how I make this and the benefits. So you got 2 blog post this week!! Yah!!

Ingredients:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Water
  • Lemon Juice
  • Tea Tree Oil
Step 5: Tony Moly Moisture Essence #

Tony Moly Moisture Essence

I am putting my essence before my stronger concentrate of AHAs and BHAs as this prevents your skin from flaking and drying. Not only that, the moisture and hydration would be able to easily penetrate into your skin compare to putting it after.

I am slightly sensitive to Acids. If I put too much or put too often, my skin would start itching and reacting. So this is good way for preventing that.

Step 6: Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid #

IMG_9886

I would pour a bit (Like Singapore 5 cents coin or lesser) to my palm and pat it into my skin. (Even though it says to use a cotton pad! Rebellion! Hahaha!! :D) I feel that it does not work as well and it is wasting products. It says that it is good for sensitive skin but for me if I put too much on my face, I start reacting a little so just be careful about it. This might be due to because I have quite dry sensitive skin. If you are worried about that, you can use to cotton pad as directed.

The reason why I am adding this in as BHAs is good for treating for

  • Acne-prone skin
  • Blackheads
  • Enlarged pores
  • Rosacea
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antibacterial

WARNING: This can increase your skin sensitive like all acids do. Your skin might be irritated when you use a higher concentrate to what your skin can take. You just need to use a lower concentrate. Everybody skin is different. So take some time to understand your skin.

TIPS: BHAs is better for Oily skin people compare to AHAs as it penetrate the oil that clogged your pores.
Step 6: Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment 5% AHA

Paulas Choice Resist AHA

I like to use both BHAs and AHAs as it give a much better results compare to using 1. AHAs is good for exfoliating on the surface area due to the sun damage you get during the day. This helps to get rid of your acne faster as it helps the new skin to grow.

WARNING: This increases your skin sun sensitive so put a good sunscreen before you leave the house. This might irritate your skin if you use a higher concentrate to what your skin can take. You just need to use a lower concentrate. Everybody skin is different. So take some time to understand your skin.

Step 7: Innisfree The Green Tea Seed Oil #

IMG_9889

The reason for using this:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-oxidant
  • Antibacterial
  • Moisturizing Properties
  • Protection from UV rays
  • Reduce the itching from reacting to the acids (I think it is just me though. Haha!!)
Step 8: Guerrisson 9-Complex

Guerisson 9-Complex Horse Oil

I use this due to the moisturizing properties. After putting so many different type acids, I needed to some heavy moisturizer to put moisture back to my skin. Also to prevent whatever I have put before to escape to the environment. I have explain in my Part 3 of this series on why I love this for moisturizing. So I would not talk much about this here.

Step 9: Artistry Essentials Anti-Blemish #

IMG_9920

This is a very gentle pimple treatment (pH level 5).  I would use on areas that pimples are about to come out or come out already. To prevent acne from coming out and have an extra acne ‘killing’ product. I use this for this routine instead of a stronger pimple treatment as there are quite a lot of things going on in routine and I would not want to “overkill” my face with acids.

As you can tell from the picture, it is kind of old and worn out. I cannot remember what the active ingredients was for this. I bought this from a friend’s recommend and she was selling it. So I was just support her that’s all and not about the ingredients and things like that. I personally do not see any results with this product and would not buy it again.

I am currently finding for a new product to try. If you know any good product, please let me know! I would love to know and try!

Step 10: Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Oil (Extra)

IMG_9945

I would only use when I have quite a bad acne or when 1 of the “gangs” start to grow bigger. The reason is that this is

  • Antibacterial
  • Anti-fungal
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Barrier restoring properties
  • Similar to benzoyl peroxide effectiveness
  • Disinfectant for breakouts (Due to Sulfur in it)

How I use it: There would be some oil on top of the opening. Just dab your finger on top of the bottle and tap ONCE on the acne. If it is one of the “gangs” , I would tap 2 to 3 times on it. Depending on the size of it. You would not want to put too much oil on it as it is pure.

LAST WORDS

Thank you for reading all the way to the end! Like I say what works for me may not work for you. Even until now, I am still trying to find ways to improve my Anti-Acne routine (or any routine for that matter). This routine does not completely take away acne from my skin. It just helps me to tame and prevent more acne from appearing on my face.

Like I said earlier this week I would have 2 blog posts!!!  To compensate last week of not able to post a blog post. Sorry about it again!! The 2nd blog post this week would be DIY Apple Cider Vinegar. Look forward to it!! Thank you for reading!! Muacks!!
